RANDOM FACTS ABOUT MACARONS

Soundtrack: Sweet for my sweet - The Searchers
  • Macaron is a meringue based sweet confectionary. Largely made from egg-whites and ground almonds.

  • Dates back to 1533, they were simple cookies back then.
  • Was made popular to the general population by famous French pastry shop Ladurée. They were the first to sandwich the cookies and gave it a filling.
  • The fancy way of calling the filling is: ganache - like guhnaash not ganaachey or geynaychi

  • There is a Macaron day and it is on the 20th of March.

  • The word macaron derives from the word macaroni or maccherone which means 'fine dough'.

  • Macarons are not Macaroons

DISH OF THE WEEK

ICE LOLLY LOVE

Soundtrack: Beautiful - Snoop Dogg & Pharrell Williams

Air-conditioned rooms are my best friends these days. It is hotter than the sun right now in Bangkok and it makes you crave for ice lollies.

Not being a fan of ice cream, yes I have been told I am not normal, ice lollies are my go-to palette cleansers.
The most convenient place on earth; 7eleven, has a good selection of these babies and I've selected a few for a little review.

MAGIC

FLAVOUR
Orange, Pineapple, Green Apple with white chocolate dipped in rainbow sprinkles

VERDICT
The milky 'surprise' was a bit of a weird combo but once you've passed it, it's rather refreshing. Plus, the colours look quite natural.........?

DRACULA

FLAVOUR
Cola and red jelly

VERDICT
Cola flavoured anything reminds me of being a kid... and the kid that never liked cola went yuk. Very chemically tasty, and there's a jelly filling that tastes like something red. You know that 'red' flavour?
This was more like an experience. THE DRACULA ICE LOLLY EXPERIENCE. It's icey cola on the outside and chewy red on the inside.
You know what, it kinda grew on me....

ZIG ZAG

FLAVOUR
Blueberry, Pineapple and Green Apple.

VERDICT
This is my favourite. It's lighter than the other 4 and no strange after taste. Best tasting neon ice water ever.

FRUITARÉ

FLAVOUR
Mixed berries (6 kinds apparently)

VERDICT
This is like the grown-up choice. Tasted like frozen berry compote. Quite natural, either that or they just managed to cover it up beautifully.

FLAVOUR
Passion fruit

VERDICT
Never liked passion fruit for it being the queen of all things sour, but! This was quite nice! I guess it's a good quick fix if you're craving for some fancy sorbet.

ASIAN DELIGHT

FLAVOUR
Taro and Coconut

VERDICT
An oldie but a goodie, the combination is very Thai. It gives you more of a dessert satisfaction and not too sweet.

Which is your favourite?

ISSUE OF THE WEEK

BRAND NEW SUGAR

Soundtrack: Tracks of my tears - Smokey Robinson and The Miracles

When Brown Sugar Jazz Bar announced that they were closing, my heart broke a little and got bitter about the invasion of Top 40 bars.
Then good news surfaced, they have relocated to Phra Sumen road. Though I must admit, I pouted still a little cause it's quite far from my house. Compared to their original spot which was a 10 minute walk. My nightly dose of live jazz was no longer a stone throw away.

After flagging down several tuk tuks to ask for directions, I finally found it. You can't really miss it, it jumps out from other creepy-looking buildings that surround it.
Walking in, I was taken back by the shear size of it. They have taken over a whole building. A whole building of Jazz and Art goodness.
Up front, the setting is more of a cafe vibe then as you walk in the trademark quirky art on the wall and random memorabilia are scattered around. Yes, you are definitely at Brown Sugar.

The long corridor leads you to the club. I like how it builds the anticipation. It was a proper TADA! moment.
Slick and cool interior designs, everything is arranged to face the stage. Shows how it really is about the music. Love.
The little lamps has the reminiscence of the old Ronnie Scott's in London.

The Henri Matisse 'Jazz' art work on the wall. I proudly have the book at home. I'm definitely in the right place...

My biggest surprise was when I discovered they had a terrace bordering the canal. Such a nice atmosphere.
Mosquitos are not a giant problem. In any case Bangkokers should be swatting away them insects ninja style by now.

GET WITH THE MUSIC

The house band plays all the classics and bop. Modern tunes and sometimes switching up to funk.

Not many places in Bangkok has this sort of vibe or jazz bars as a matter a fact. So support your local artists and come down for some drinks, food and ear candy.
